Oregano is probably not what you think of when you think of topical essential oils. Typically, it’s a spice you put in your sauces and pasta dishes, maybe even a Thanksgiving turkey to make them super delicious but it can be applied topically if it’s diluted.
So let’s get into exactly how beneficial this essential oil is for the skin.
A Little History
Oregano is a flowering plant with dark green leaves and pink or white flowers. There are many species and the essential oil is derived from the dried flowering top of the herb through steam distillation.
The native origins of Oregano include Europe, the Middle East, Spain and Asia Minor. Used by ancient herbalists to treat ailments such as digestion, aching muscles and fever, it’s proven to be a valuable herb to keep in the house in it’s multiple forms.
While the aromatic Oregano plant is found all over the world, the oil is mainly produced in Spain Israel, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey.
Topical and Olfactory Uses
Oregano essential oil is considered and analgesic, antiheumatic, antiseptic, antiviral, antispasmodic, diuretic, parasiticide, stimulant, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and cytophylactic. It’s also been used as a disinfectant as well as helping to reduce the appearance of cellulite.
This list is not exhaustive. There are many more interesting qualities of Oregano essential oil.
Used topically, it’s said to treat ailments such as ringworm, poisonous bites, and heal sores. In fact, I was introduced to Oregano essential oil by a friend who told me it would help heal a sore I had. And it did.
Caution…this oil heats up on the skin and MUST be used with a carrier oil of some sort. Coconut oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, just use something because otherwise, Ouch!
Other uses include staph infections, headaches, insect repellent, mood lifter, purifier (it helps to open the nasal passages), relieve tight muscles, prevent seasickness, and possibly help with tumors.
Oregano is an oil with camphor properties and pairs well with other camphor oils such as Sage, Thyme, Marjoram, Rosemary, Pine. It also pairs well with Lavender, Sweet Orange, Basil, Citronella, and Mint.
